Dr. Beverly Joyce Perry

Dr. Beverly Joyce Miller-Perry was born on September 12, 1948 to Betty Joyce and John Bishop Miller Jr. at the Houston Negro Hospital (later known as the Riverside Hospital). She was second of two children born to that union and the oldest daughter of Betty Harriell Jones. Dr. Perry excelled in school graduating with Highest Honors in 1967 from Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston, TX. She married and had Kwame Malik Perry, Naresha and Naresh Perry. Later in life, Daniel Edwards, her fourth child, was born. Dr. Beverly Perry attended Texas Southern University receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with minor in Chemistry, and Master’s degree in Psychology. After completing college, she taught school for Houston Independent School District from 1972 to 1980. She returned to school attending Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama where she completed a second Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and her Doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine with Certification in 1985. She practiced Veterinary medicine from 1985-1988. Feeling the passion of teaching again, she became a Biology Instructor for HCCS from 1988-98. In 1998, she became the Chair of the Biological Sciences. Later and at the time of her death she was Biology Co-Chair. At the time of her passing, Dr. Beverly J. Miller-Perry had worked for the Houston Community College System for Thirty Years. Dr. Perry was a 1969 Epsilon Mu Charter Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc at North Texas State University, in Denton, Texas and from 1970-72 Gamma Psi Chapter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Texas Southern University and the Assistant Dean of Pledgees. Her Many Accomplishments Include: Member, Texas Community College Teachers Association (2005 - Present) National Science Teachers Association (2004 - Present) TCCTA Member (1988 – Present) Faculty Senator, HCCS, Faculty Representative NE (1997-Present) Association of Women Administrators, HCCS (1997 - Present) Member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1973 - Present) Member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church on North Main Street for Eight Years Doctoral Graduate of Tuskegee University Legendary College of Veterinary Medicine Thirty-nine years ago, Dr. Beverly Miller-Perry joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Dr. Charles L. Jackson and continued serving faithfully under the leadership of Dr. Sheldon L. Jackson. Dr. Perry was an outstanding member of the Mass Choir and the Adult Women Class #5 in the Sunday School Department. She supported all ministries at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was also the scribe for the Pastor at Teacher's Meeting. Her passion was singing at the 8:00am Early Morning Service and her biggest delight was just sitting and listening to her pastors preach and teach The Word of God. Congregants would hear the voice of Dr. Perry echoing out loud and agreeing with what the Pastor had just said, as if they were having a private conversation. She leaves behind four children, Kwame M. Perry (Demetreik), Naresha, Naresh (Kia), and Daniel Edwards. She also leaves behind her mother, Betty H. Jones; Brothers John Bishop Miller III (Beverly), and Kenneth Jones Jr. (Dana); Sisters Jennifer Lampkin (Thomas), Gwen Jones Richardson (William), Johnese Miller (Bernard), Rhonda Miller and Ami Miller. A host of grandchildren: Joshua, Valicia, Taeya, Alexis K. Perry and Kwame M. Perry II and four great-grandchildren
