Deacon Lionel Livingston Joyce Sr.

Obituary of Lionel Livingston Joyce, Sr. On Tuesday, December 10, 2019, surrounded by his wife, family, and friends, Lionel Livingston Joyce, Sr.was called to his eternal rest. Lionel was born on November 13, 1937 to the late Joseph Livingston Joyce and the late Cardella Randle Joyce in New Orleans, LA. He was the first born and big brother of four sisters and one little brother. He accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Stronger Hope Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA under the leadership of Reverend J. J. Carter. He was educated in the Orleans Parish public school system. As a young man, Lionel relocated to Bloomington, IL. Lionel was the father of Lionel Joyce, Jr., Gwendolyn Joyce, Terrance Joyce, Karan Joyce, Joseph Joyce, Joy Mayes, and Lionel Freeman. He moved to Bloomington, Illinois where he was a faithful member, taught Sunday School, sang in the Male Choir, and later became an ordained Deacon at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and then became the Deacon Chair. He married Dr. Marguerite Patricia (Mays) Shane Joyce in 1984 in Chalmette, Louisiana. They resided in Normal, IL where Deacon Joyce retired from Paxton’s Office Supply Company and moved to Lake Charles, LA; Deacon and Dr. Joyce later moved to Altadena, CA. Lionel was Deacon Chair at the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Pasadena, CA. After 14 years, he and Dr. Joyce moved to Houston, TX, and joined The Church Without Walls in 2003. Lionel served faithfully in the Deacon Family Life Ministry, the Men’s Ministry, the Marriage Ministry, the Momentum Men’s Ministry, the Decision Time Ministry, the S.A.L.T Ministry, and taught Adult Sunday School. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Joyce, and his children Gwendolyn and Joseph Joyce. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Marguerite Shane Joyce, her son Reverend Jeffrey N. Shane (Sheila), Cypress, TX; his children, Rev. Lionel Joyce, Jr. (Rosario) Bloomington, IL; Terrance Joyce, New Orleans, LA; Karen Joyce (New Orleans, LA); Joy Mayes (Atlanta, GA); and Lionel Freeman (Georgia), Plano, TX; his grandchildren Damicia, Taylor, and D’jevan Shane (Atlanta, GA); Marie Joyce (Raleigh, NC), Rosie Taplin (College Station, TX); Cardella Joyce, Lionel Joyce, III, Ramon and Reyhana Pippins, Christopher Williams, and Steffon Shadewaldt, Bloomington, IL; Kesean, Tyseana, and Leseana Franklin, Gerald Pinkston, and Jordan Manglona (Cypress, TX); Joe Manglona (Monterey, CA), and Danielle Lake, (Denver, CO); Jayln,, Shamika, and Zayla Berger (Atlanta, GA), Adonyel Byrd and Marquis Freeman (Plano, TX). Deacon Joyce has seven great-grandchildren: Kayden Williams, Kyler Hayes, Kinsley Garrett, and Khalil Williams (Bloomington, IL); Jaci Shane, (Atlanta, GA); Holden Joyce (College Station, TX), Mahlia Robinson, (Denver, CO), Kaylee Kai Manglona, Jurnee Manglona, Joseph Manglona, (Monterey, CA); Jayln Berger, Jr. and Elijah Brown, (Atlanta, GA). His sisters are Gwendolyn Joyce Liggins (Rogers), Della Joyce Scott, Barbara Joyce Foster, the late Aszerine Joyce Theophile McMillon (New Orleans, LA), and brother, the late John Randle Joyce (New Orleans, LA). Deacon Joyce leaves numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends to cherish his memory as well as our other daughters Gwendolyn Mason-Harris (Ted) (Pasadena, CA); Leslie Fowler (Altadena, CA); Myiesha Stephens (Eric) (Houston, TX) and their children and grandchildren.
