Mrs. Shirley Boyette

Shirley Annette Washington Boyette was the second of five children born on December 31, 1939 to James Washington and Marguerite Samples Washington in Hallettsville, TX. Her father, James, was a tailor & owner of a dry-cleaning business, Washington Cleaners in Hallettsville, Texas. Her mother, Marguerite, was an educator who taught school in Breslau, TX and Hallettsville, TX. Shirley grew up and attended elementary and high school in Hallettsville, TX. She was a very bright student, excelled academically, and graduated from Hallettsville Colored High School at the age of 16. She enrolled in Texas Southern University in Houston, TX where she met and married Clord Samuel Boyette, of Orange, Texas. Clord was a promising young football athlete. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, and had a brief career due to suffering a knee injury. To this union three boys were born: Clord, Sam, and Corey Boyette. Shirley worked as an Administrative Assistant to the principal of Daule High School in Cuero, TX. She later entered a work-study program at Huth Memorial Hospital in Yoakum, TX and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Upon graduation from Huth’s Nursing program, she relocated back to Houston and worked at several hospitals in Houston, TX. She retired as Chief Administrator of St. Thomas Nursing & Rehab facility in Houston, TX. Growing up, Shirley was a member of Richardson Chapel Methodist Church, the Methodist Youth Fellowship and the Lavaca County 4-H club. She was also on her high school basketball team and the pep squad. She loved plants and flowers and had a green thumb for growing them. Her main joy in life, however, was being a Mother and Grandmother and cooking for “her boys.” Shirley also served as an Assistant Director with National Back Home Service, a non-profit organization founded in 1999, by her mother and sister. She served the Hallettsville branch with Marilyn Rice, which was dedicated to providing gifts and services to the senior residents of Hallettsville, Texas. She joined Windsor Village UMC in Houston, TX, and remained there until her death. Shirley transitioned from her earthly life on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 10:22am in Park Plaza Hospital in Houston, TX. She was predeceased by her husband, mother, father, brother James Washington Jr, and sisters Martha Lazelle Washington and Evelyn Brown. She is survived by three siblings: Sister Marcia Curry of Houston, TX, Brothers Henry Washington of Houston, TX. and Dave “Party” Washington of Hallettsville, TX., Children: Clord Samuel Boyette Jr., Sam Adrian Boyette and Corey Sean Boyette, all of Houston Texas; Grandchildren: Rocky Boyette, Raine Boyette and Theresa Nelms; Great Grandchildren: Janise Nelms and Zahara Nelms, of Houston, TX; Brother -in -Law Garland Boyette Sr. of Houston TX., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins , in-laws, and other extended family members and friends too numerous to name.
